We have to agree on what we should be teaching. But assessing whether things have been taught is the trick. I had similar experiences, loving my English and history teachers and not connecting with teachers of other subjects. And I too ended up being an English teacher. What the business/politics of education people don't seem to understand is that the personal connection to the teacher and the teacher's passion for the subject are a huge part of how/why kids learn. And I don't think that can be taught-- or measured in any standardized test.
