She always struggled for supplies and materials, and in general, support from the district and community. I remain awestruck myself by what these teachers must deal with, yet continue to serve and teach their students.Bill Cameronhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04796321136771189464noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3388578325782539013.post-6972945118649308712016-11-04T21:11:00.817-04:002016-11-04T21:11:00.817-04:00Excellent post! I bet most of us who write, or are successful in some field of creativity, can look back on a teacher who had a real influence on them during their school years. Mom was a middle school language arts teacher who still had former students stopping by when she was in her mid-eighties. Our daughter teaches 5th grade in an inner city school and I'm awed by the stories she shares about challenges her kids face and how she helps them do so. Ditto to what you said about Kaepernick, too. Thanks for this post.Berekhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14172936893264053007noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3388578325782539013.post-91315367431864779472016-11-04T12:30:21.847-04:002016-11-04T12:30:21.847-04:00Thank you, Patty.

The degree to which some people feel threatened by it suggests guilt, and the expressions of rage show it's a guilt they don't want to confront. Sigh.Bill Cameronhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04796321136771189464noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3388578325782539013.post-71161958840703645172016-11-04T11:47:28.471-04:002016-11-04T11:47:28.471-04:00This post is everything, Bill. I share many of you...This post is everything, Bill. I share many of your sentiment. I personally think Colin K. is not just a hero, but a true patriot -- and I get viciously attacked by certain members of my own family when I do. I mean, a protest is by definition, an emphatic objection. I think he did that and did it in such a peaceful way. No blood was shed. No angry insults hurled. The very same relatives who shoot me down for this demand to know why he hasn't donated any of his own money to the cause he's protesting. The thing is, he HAS. But that's not public enough. I find true bravery in going against the tide, so to speak, even though, as you pointed out, it put a target on him. <br /><br />I've never served in the military but agree that the Thank You For Your Service has become synonymous with Have a Nice Day... something that serves the person saying it more than the person hearing it. As anxious as you may have been about this post, you gave me something to think about: what heroism truly means. Right now, that means thinking about my own hypocrisy. <br /><br />Thank you, Bill :) Patty Blounthttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11928111057602279792noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3388578325782539013.post-70101189660808475122016-11-04T10:52:56.214-04:002016-11-04T10:52:56.214-04:00Thank you, Courtney. Last night at about 11pm, I was saying to my wife, "There's still time for me to take it down, write something. I could write a jokey post about that old TV short, Greatest American Hero. Ha ha, that show was so great. *sings* "Believe it or not, I'm walking on air!"<br /><br />My wife patted me on the head and told me it would be fine. I have many of the same concerns about overuse of the term. I often lump "hero" in with "thoughts and prayers" in the sense that it allows people to feel good about themselves without taking any real action to fix the problem.Courtney McKinney-Whitakerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10251306522999532890noreply@blogger.com
