There was a 1920s propaganda effort (The Jefferson Davis Highway) spearheaded by the United Daughters of the Confederacy that planted confederate monuments throughout the southwest, including in Arizona and San Diego.Dean Glosterhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11282040032216742096noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3388578325782539013.post-2356826049546078192017-08-30T19:16:15.843-04:002017-08-30T19:16:15.843-04:00Thanks, and my pleasure. I love bringing reading material that ties in with a trip--it seems to make both the book and the travel seem more memorable.Dean Glosterhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11282040032216742096noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3388578325782539013.post-5209587086089855602017-08-28T18:55:46.633-04:002017-08-28T18:55:46.633-04:00Welcome to YAOTL, Dean! Also, I agree wholeheartedly about the monuments. Something weird and awful that I noticed when I was in the Czech Republic recently was a Confederate flag hanging outside a small house. I think they outlawed Nazi flags there, but it was interesting to me that someone there believed that the Confederate flag would make a good stand in for it.
