Dancing Through November--By Kimberly Sabatini

Since I was 3 years old, November has meant primarily one thing, dance recital time. I still attend the same studio I danced with when I was a preschooler and now I teach the little ones myself. I'm not going to go into the full history of my dancing today, but I'll give you the short version...

First recital.

Last recital before going off to college, then getting married, then moving back home and having three kids and finally coming back to class and teaching.

I have always danced because it makes me feel good. For many years between picture #1 and #2--I dreamed of being a professional dancer.  That never happened, but that's food for another blog post. The point of this post, is that I've come to realize that dance is just like writing. It is an alternate artistic medium that I derive a great amount of pleasure from. It's another way that I connect with my inner self and I use it to express what I'm feeling. It is about connecting--both with the audience and the people I share the stage with. I'll be dancing again on November 16th and 17th and I can't wait because we're doing a lyrical 9/11 tribute and I'm very proud of it. But since it's too early to share that with you, I though I'd show you one of the 2011 performances. At the start of last year, my friend and dance teacher (seen in the video) was diagnosed with breast cancer. That year we decided we were going to dance her through it...

Other than writing, what other form of artistic expression feeds your soul?

  1. I love this post. I used to dance and wish I'd kept up with it because today, I can't move. :(

There is no time for artistic expression except for my writing. But I am now very tempted to contact the dance school near my house. Maybe they have Couch Potato classes for middle-aged women?

  2. Like Patty above me, I used to dance. From kindergarten to 4th or 5th grade I danced. I eventually quit - not because I didn't love it - but because the girls I carpooled with were mean to me and were in my dance group. I didn't want to deal with seeing them at school and at dance. I wish I'd kept up with it because I really love it. ;) I never leave the dance floor at weddings or bar mitzvahs. :)

  3. Didn't dance as a kid and I'm not a dancer now, but I admire those like you who can.
