This Gift of Music by Kimberly Sabatini

Music plays a very specific role in my writing process...

BRAINSTORMING

I usually can't draft to music, but when I'm in that creative place where I'm gathering bits and pieces of inspiration and connection from the universe--that's when music plays it's part.

I'll make a playlist of songs that contain many of the bits and pieces of ideas and feelings that are floating around inside my head and then I'll play them as I'm running and driving.

Basically, they are the soundtrack to my daydreaming.

Here's one of my favorite songs from my work in progress...

THIS GIFT by Glen Hansard

I hope music, writing and your creative process are a gift to you...

What one song is driving your current work in progress or your emotional life at the moment?

  1. What a great song, Kim! I just downloaded it. "Fix You" by Coldplay was the song that drove my most recent book to completion, especially one critical scene. I'm planning to write more about it when I post. :)

  2. Love this. One of my favorites is Don't Dream It's Over by Crowded House. The line, "They come, they come
to build a wall between us; we know they won't win" is kind of a mantra for my life. ;-)

    1. I don't think I ever listened that closely--I can see why that would inspire <3

  4. I listen to a variety of music when I work depending on the day...The Eagles, Sinatra, Leon Redbone, John Pizzarelli, Elvis or just a cool jazz score (Mr. Lucky is a good one). I'll often take a break to play my guitar so I can then return fresh to the work. One of my favorite instrumental songs is "Emanuel" by Michel Colombier...you can actually feel this song. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kcMaxo0OaZo

  5. My grandmother passed away a month ago. Iron and Wine's "Passing Afternoon" reminds me of her. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q0dP7iZv9K0

  7. Great post, Kim. I'm listening to a few songs for inspiration right now. I keep coming back to Fight Song because I'm writing another rape culture story. In this book, main character Ashley fights with her brother over what happened to her.

The book coming out in August, The Way It Hurts, the book you inspired, has an entire playlist!
