Write What you Know (Brian Katcher)
They say to write what you know. If you're an athlete, write about the big game. If you're a soldier, write about war. If you're an idiot man child who is forced to return to elementary school so your father thinks you're ready to take over his hotel chain, then write that.
But what happens when we exhaust our life experiences? Can the public stand yet another YA book based on my myriad high school girl friends, my multiple sporting achievements, and my penchant for lying? Moreover, how many novels can I write about awkward pasty white guys and the unconventional women they fall for?
I guess I'll have to get out of my comfort zone. Write about people who have had different experiences than me. I actually have an awesome idea for a book, but I have to learn everything about Catholicism, Italy, and the Olympic pistol event (watch this space).
In conclusion, if my parents had beaten me or if I had a debilitating prescription pill habit, I'd be in a much better place as a writer.
It's honestly a really important question...
ReplyDeleteWords from the infamous 'Anonymous' Why not write about those three things. Heck, at this point in the world's scary plunge toward the end, ya might as well have fun.
